Searching for Products

X-Cart provides a built-in search engine which can be used to search for a specific product or to list all the products in a certain category.

Note. In X-Cart PRO edition providers can search and list only the products they control. The administrator, fulfillment staff and root provider can view all the products of the store.

Basic search

  1. Click on Search for products in the Products menu, the 'Search for products' form appears.

  1. Specify the necessary search parameters:

• Select the category in which you want the search to be conducted.

• Specify if this category is main or additional for the product you are going to search for.

• If you want subcategories to be searched, select the 'also search in subcategories' check box.

• Enter your pattern into the 'Search for pattern' field. A pattern is a fragment of the product title, short description or detailed description by which the system will be able to identify the product.

• Specify where the system should search for this fragment by selecting 'Title', 'Short description' and/or 'Detailed description' check box(es).

• If you have any enabled extra fields, mark the check boxes next to the names of extra fields in which you think the pattern may be contained.

Note. If you want the system just to list all the products in the store, skip step 2.

  1. Click on Search. Search results will be displayed in the 'Search results' form.

Note. If you are  searching for a product / group of products in order to modify their details, you can use the 'Search-and-modify' option. Select this check box and all the products found by your search query will be displayed in a list from which you will be able to view and modify the product details by clicking on the product name links (The product details form appears below the list of found products).

It is not necessary to fill out all the fields in the 'Advanced search options' section. Specify only the parameters relevant to your search. The more information you will provide about the product, the more accurate the search results will be. You can specify:

  1. SKU

  2. Product ID#

  3. Price range

  4. Quantity range

  5. Weight range

  6. Availability status (Available for sale, Disabled, Bundled)

  7. Additional options (Assigned or Not assigned):

Free shipping

• Global discounts

• Minimum order amount

• List price

• Shipping freight

• Tax exempt

• Low limit in stock

After providing the necessary parameters, click on Search. All the products found by your search query will be listed in the 'Search results' form.

Search results

The 'Search results' form shows the product SKU, title, quantity and price for each of the found products.

Clicking on the product title or SKU links of a product enables you to view and modify the details of a product.

Quantity and Price can be updated right in the 'Search results' form: just enter the new values into the appropriate fields and click on Update.

You can delete products listed in the search results: select the check boxes of the products you want to delete, then click on Delete selected.

You can modify products listed in the search results: select the check boxes of the products you want to modify, then click on Modify selected.

You can use the  Check all / Uncheck all links above the search results table to select or unselect all the products in the search results list.

The lower row of buttons (Preview product, Clone product and Generate HTML links) enables you to preview or clone a product and to generate HTML links. All these operations apply only to the first product if multiple products are selected.

Clicking the Search again link takes you back to the 'Search for products' form and enables you to start a new search.

Page navigation

Paging is provided for more convenient navigation in cases when the list of results delivered by the search engine is too long. The number of products per page and the maximum number of navigation pages can be defined through the Appearance options section of the admin zone (General Settings>Appearance Options>Products per page (admin) and General Settings>Appearance Options>Maximum navigation pages).
